HHS Expands Initiative to Combat Fraud and Abuse

On November 22, 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”) announced the award of another $9 million in grants from CMS to assist 52 Senior Medicare Patrol (“SMP”) programs across the nation in their efforts to fight Medicare fraud. The SMP program is operated by the Administration on Aging (“AOA”) in collaboration with CMS and HHS, and is designed to recruit and train retired professionals and other senior citizens in identifying and reporting health care fraud and abuse. Since its inception in 1997, the SMP program is credited with assisting in the recovery of more than $100 million in federal health care dollars.
This funding is but another example of the federal government’s commitment to combating fraud and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which abuse is reported to represent billions of lost dollars each year.
